In a rare instance, the court of Arun Kumar Singhal, Additional District and Sessions Judge, last week completed the trial in a criminal case in just one day.
Rajinder Singh, a resident of Khuda Lahora, who was arrested by UT Police on March 26 on charges of wrongful confinement, criminal trespass, robbery and possession of stolen property, was convicted on Friday.
On Tuesday, the court sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 2,500.
During the trial, six witnesses were examined by the court in two hours. These included police officials, the complainant who identified the accused, a doctor of GMCH-32 and a mobile repair shop owner.
The case was registered on a complaint of Parminder Singh, a Punjab Police head constable living in Sector 20, who said that Rajinder Singh came to his house at 7 pm, posing as a meter reader and said he wanted to check the water meter.
Parminder took him to the rear of the house where the meter was installed.
Rajinder then punched Parminder, felling him down. He took Parminder’s mobile and purse, locked him inside the house, and escaped. With the help of neighbours, Parminder later got out and called the police.
Rajinder was traced by the police in a few days using the mobile phone tower location of the stolen phone.
