Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Thursday blamed the Congress for “defaming Punjabis as drug addicts”. Speaking at the state-level function to mark the 30th death anniversary of Sant Harchand Singh Longowal at Longowal village in Sangrur, Naqvi was also all praise for the Badals.
“I don’t find any drug abuse issue in Punjab, at least the way it has been projected. It is a conspiracy of the Congress and AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi in particular. The Congress is responsible for the 1984 Sikh riots and Operation Bluestar and is now defaming Punjabis as addicts,” Naqvi said.
He also singled out Amritsar MP and Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh for criticism. “The 40-odd Congress MPs in Parliament don’t even know about their deputy leader. A person who insults the mandate of the people by not attending Parliament can never be loyal to the people,” Naqvi said.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal described Harchand Singh Longowal as a true saint, who sacrificed his life to safeguard the interests of the Sikh community. He accused the then Congress government of having “back-stabbed” Harchand Longowal, the SAD president during militancy years, by not implementing clauses of the Rajeev-Longowal accord, “for which Punjabis could never forgive the Congress”.
Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, however, on Capt Amarinder Singh than the Congress in general. Sukhbir Badal accused Amarinder of leading a aristocratic life not grounded in reality. “Capt Amarinder and the PPCC president should stop dreaming of assuming power in 2017 as the SAD-BJP will sweep to power again,” he said.
