The Congress has decided to take up the matter of the municipal corporation issuing challans of Rs 3,500 for wrong parking during the house meet scheduled for next week.

The Congress would ask if issuing such challans was in the purview of the civic body or not. City Congress chief Pardeep Chhabra said: “We will definitely take up the matter in the house if challaning for wrong parking is in the purview of the civic body or not. We will ask the municipal officials to show the particular act that allows them to tow wrongly-parked vehicles and charge a hefty fine of Rs 3,500.”

Adding that it is the duty of the traffic police, Chhabra asked if this is a way of the municipal corporation to make the multilevel parking work.

Two days ago, on the pattern of traffic police, the enforcement wing of the municipal corporation had sought ten wheel clamps for wrong parking.

At present, the civic body has been towing wrongly-parked vehicles using a crane. The charges for the crane to lift a vehicle are added to the fine amount of the violator. A crane would charge Rs 500 per vehicle for lifting. A fine of Rs 3,500 is imposed on four-wheelers and Rs 1,000 on two-wheelers for wrong parking.

This was started to make the multilevel parking in Sector 17 work so that people stop parking on roads and go to the multilevel site.
