CTU to prepare report on improving bus services

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) said it would prepare a report on improvement of its bus services within the tricity. A discussion on the issue was held in a review meeting of UT administration officials with Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil. A review of the functioning of CTU was done and discussion held on how to increase efficiency. Purchase of new buses would be expedited and the action plan would be submitted within six weeks.

Panchkula mayor to focus on development

PANCHKULA: City Mayor,Upinder Ahluwalia,on Thursday assumed office,promising that she will speed up development in the city and will also on priority help set up the office of the Panchkula Municipal Corporation (PMC) which is currently running from the community center in Sector 4. Among those who were present on the occasion,were Deputy Commissioner,Panchkula,Ashima Brar,who is the Commissioner of the Corporation,city magistrate Vandana Disodia,and newly elected members including Bhawna Gupta and Lily Bawa.

Seminar on World Population Day

Chandigarh: The Senior Citizens Welfare Association,Manimajra,in association with Yes Bank,NAC,Manimajra,celebrated World Population Day on the bank premises Thursday. Dr V P Nagpal delivered the keynote address to the audience,comprising Yes Bank staff,HelpAge India and elders of Manimajra. Amrit Dhingra,president of the association,said elders can play a constructive role in educating and motivating the young to follow small-family norms.

CITCO to hold ice cream festival

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO) in association with Chandigarh Tourism will be holding the Yippie Ice Cream Festival on the occasion of World Ice Cream Day. The three-day festival will be inaugurated on July 12 at Sukhna Lake. The lake is being decked up with a huge frontal gate depicting Mickey Mouse with a huge ice-cream cone. Another attraction of the festival will be a life-sized ice cream cup 20 feet in height. An ice cream-eating contest will also be held. The festival will witness participation of various brands in addition to the traditional ice creams.

Section 144 around power sub-divisions

Chandigarh: The UT Administration has imposed Section 144 within a 200 metres radius of all electricity sub-divisions on July 12. These include divisions in Sectors 17,19,23,10,18,15,20,35,43,40,near Transport lightpoint as well as Industrial Area Phases I and II. Section 144 has been imposed in wake of the threat of protest by the UT Powermen Union against the corporatisation of the Electricity Department. City residents can contact complaint centres in their areas for electricity complaints. In case of someone sabotaging lines,residents can call the control rooms. The numbers are – Sector 17 (2703242,2700200),Sector 9 (2742370,2743940) and citizen’s facilitation centre (4639999).

BJP to hold rally against clean chit to Bansal

Chandigarh: The city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party will be holding a vehicle rally against giving clean chit to former Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal by CBI. Jagat Prakash Nadda,National General Secretary of BJP will lead the rally which will start from Sector 34. The rally will mark the end of Black Week being observed by BJP. Starting from Sector 34,the rally will pass through Sectors 35,36,37,24,23,22,21,20,30,29,28,27,19,18 and culminate at Sector 17 where a street play will be presented. The party members will wave black flags along the way.

PU panels to look into students’ grievances

CHANDIGARH: Panjab University (PU),has constituted an Advisory Committee (Admissions) for the academic session 2013-14. The Vice-Chancellor,Prof Arun Kumar Grover,has appointed Dean University Instructions,Dean Students Welfare (Men and Women),Coordinators CET(PG),CET(UG),Coordinator Laws Admissions and Dean Faculty of Arts as the members of the committee. The committee will redress admission related grievances of the students. It will also hear complaints about any discrimination,bias or favouritism.

Lions Club elects new committee

Chandigarh: Sushil Kapoor was unanimously elected president of Lions Club Chandigarh Greater,an affiliate of Lions International. The other elected members of the team are Dheeraj Kumar as general secretary,Pramodh Comar as treasurer,Praveen Anand as first vice-president,Amarjot Singh as second vice-president and Manjit Singh as third vice-president. The newly elected president stated that all the ongoing projects will be carried forward in letter and spirit. Kapoor stated that the club would also organize eye screening camps,eye operation camps and seminars on several social issues.

Meet on HMCH-26 affiliation inconclusive

CHANDIGARH: The management of the Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital,Sector 26 on Thursday held a meeting with the students to discuss all the issues related to the affiliation of the college,but nothing concrete has come out. Students,dissatisfied with the efforts made by the management to restore the reputation of the college,continued their protest. Students held that they want the resignation of all the 11 members of the management.

Saupin’s schoolkids says no to drugs

CHANDIGARH: With an aim to spread the message ‘Say no to drugs’,students of Class X of Saupin’s School,Sector 32 on Thursday presented a programme on the root cause,consequences and aftermath of drug abuse. The show included a thought provoking song,an English poem and a power-point presentation highlighting the ill-effects of drug abuse.

Man caught bribe to arrange transfer papers

Chandigarh: The UT Vigilance department on Thursday arrested Deputy Superintendent (Establishment),Labour Department,Haryana for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a grade II employee working in the same department. The accused,Devinder Sapra,aged 42,was caught red-handed by the vigilance team while accepting the bribe at around 5 pm in Sector 17. The victim,Rajbir Singh had been transferred to Chandigarh in the rank of an assistant in the Labour department office of Haryana and wanted to go back.

Chandigarh: Punjab Government Thursday suspended Mohan Lal,Superintendent of Police after his arrest in the case of abetment to suicide of Lovepreet Kaur,who committed suicide.
