City lads Ajay Yadav,Digvijay Mehta and Digvijay Singh Naruka paired with their respective partners to register convincing wins and moved ahead in the men’s doubles category of the HTA-AITA Men’s and Women’s Tournament played at Jassowal on Wednesday. Digvijay Singh Naruka and Rishab Dev,meanwhile,beat the pair of Rashein Samuel and kamal Surana,both of Karnataka,6-3,1-6,12-10 to move into the last four.
Earlier,in the pre-quarter finals,Ajay Yadav and Gurinder Singh outplayed the pair of V. Pranav and P. Nitesh 4-1,4-2. In another match,Digvijay Mehta paired with Suraj Beniwal and got the better of the fourth seeded duo of Prosonjit Paul and Advait N. Sadwilkar 4-1,4-1. However,it was a bad day for city players as both Digvijay Singh Mehta and Garry Singh Amor crashed out men’s category. Eager to register his berth in the quarter-finals of the men’s event,Digvijay started well and took the first set 6-4 against Arjun Singh of Delhi. However,he could not carry the momentum forward and lost the second set 2-6. In the final set he tried to prevent the sixth seed Arjun from walking away with the game but failed to do so and lost by 4-6.
Meanwhile,Garry Singh Amor fought bravely but lost to eighth seed Prosonjit Paul of Jharkhand 5-7,6-7 (5-7). Both the players indulged in an attacking game but Paul maintained his composure and pulled off a superb win. In another match,unseeded Vishwesh Sinha from Maharashtra whitewashed fourth seeded Shantanu Rajput of Delhi 6-0,6-0. Second seed Bharat Bhardwaj of Haryana was ousted by eighth seed Prosonjit Paul of Jharkhand in three sets 2-6,6-3,6-3.
