The last journey of a person in the city continues to be tough,as children’s burial ground, the electric crematorium, which works occasionally, and the roads leading to cremation grounds in some villages are in a sorry state.

While several proposals have been made for maintenance of cremation and burial ground, the progress on ground is not visible.

Despite instances of bodies of children being dug up either by stray animals or in some cases by people from the burial ground, the boundary wall of the ground has not been constructed. Due to a dispute over the land being in the forest area,no action has been taken.

There have been complaints from people, who find it difficult to locate a proper place to bury the body due to growth of weeds.

The electric crematorium is often not in working condition. Parmod Sharma,co-ordinator of NGO Yuvsatta, said,“The burial ground for children is in a pitiable shape. No development has been made, despite repeated complaints. The electric crematorium, which is a pollution-free way to perform the last rites,is often non-functional. There is a need for proper checks. If the civic body is not able to do so,then a committee of residents should be constituted, who can regularly monitor the grounds”.

Several villages have their own cremation grounds that are present on the outskirts of the city. In some villages, that are under the purview of the Administration, development of the roads leading to cremation grounds is not being undertaken. The plea being taken is that the area is outside lal dora.

Khuda Jassu Balwinder Singh,a sarpanch, said,“The officials keep telling us that the cremation grounds are outside lal dora. But there is no cremation ground that will be within the village premises”.
