A DAY after The Indian Express report that two GMSH staffers, who worked in the hospital’s X-ray department, have been detected with high levels of radiation, the Chandigarh Health department on Thursday said the X-Ray units installed at the hospital will be rechecked for any possible leakage.
“We have already ordered an inquiry to check how the staffers were detected with high levels of radiation,” UT Director of Health Services Dr V K Gagneja, who is also heading the hospital, told The Indian Express.
“For the safety of our staff, we will now re-check the entire unit to see if there is any leakage or any other issue”.
On Thursday, senior officials of the hospital also conducted an inspection of the X-ray rooms and directed the staff to follow all necessary guidelines.
An official from the radiography department said that the medical superintendent who carried an inspection issued directions to all the staff members to follow norms set by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre ( BARC ).
“We were asked to put the necessary safety gear and also to close all connecting doors between the two X-ray rooms,” said an official.
The closure of the connecting doors inside the rooms had been suggested by a BARC team, which had visited the hospital a few months ago.
An official from the GMSH administration told The Indian Express that a fresh reminder is also being sent to the engineering wing, so that “modern” X-ray rooms, with latest guidelines, are set up at the hospital.
