Chandigarh residents recently urged UT adviser Dharam Pal to construct a walking track for residents of Modern Housing Complex (MHC), Rajeev Vihar, and Uppal Marble Arch in Sector 13.
Col Gursewak Singh, president of the MHC Resident Welfare Association, submitted a memorandum to Pal in this regard. He said, “There is a long-felt need for having a walking track for residents of MHC. In the absence of any suitable place for walking, residents of over 3,300 dwelling units of MHC, Rajeev Vihar, and Uppal Marble Arch are obliged to take a walk either on narrow residential roads or in neighbourhood parks. Walking on such roads is fraught with danger. There is always a risk of accidents on account of heavy vehicular traffic. Secondly, residents run the risk of dog bites, of which there have been numerous cases. Parks in MHC are too small in size for walking besides being overcrowded due to high-density population.”
The residents also submitted a proposal to construct a walking track on the vast belt of government land lying vacant adjoining MHC and facing Uppal Marble Arch. The residents said a part of this land could be converted into a walking track. “In case some other project is being planned in this area, let the residents use this vacant land as a walking track till work on such projects actually starts. Sector 13 lacks many facilities,” said a resident.
