The Chandigarh Police has procured a ‘Light Armoured Troops Carrier’ to handle any terror attack in the city.

The Chandigarh Police has procured a ‘Light Armoured Troops Carrier’ (LATC) to handle any terror attack in the city.

Named ‘Kavach’ by the Chandigarh Police, the bullet and explosive-proof vehicle will be ‘used to ferry commandos of a crack team to any spot instantly in case of any Mumbai like terror attack where the terrorists positioned themselves in hotels and buildings.’

“We have procured the LATC recently and we have named it ‘Kavach’ (sanskrit word for armour). It is a bullet proof and air-conditioned vehicle which can ferry six commandos,a driver and a wireless operator, all armed with assault rifles to fight terrorists hiding at any place,” the Inspector General of Police,Chandigarh,Pradeep Kumar Srivastava said.

Chandigarh is among the few cities in the country to have acquired LATC. “The armoured vehicle will help the Chandigarh police to fight any terror attack as the commandos ferried to the spot will engage the terrorists instantly,” he said.

The IGP added the LATC provided all-round protection against Self-Loading Rifles and AK 47 rifles and also ensured protection from hand grenades. The tyres of LATC are also bullet proof.

“The six commandos who will be seated inside the vehicle can use medium machine guns to fight the terrorists as the armoured vehicle had got over six ports,“ he said.

The LATC has been manufactured by Tata Motors and costs Rs 56 lakh.
