VIOLATING THE norms of Chandigarh Advertisement Control Order (CACO) will cost the BJP dear as the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is in the process of calculating a fine – of nearly Rs 1.80 crore – for putting up banners congratulating Vijay Sampla for being appointed Punjab BJP president.

The banners were put up in several parts of the city Tuesday, which were later removed by enforcement staff .

MC joint commissioner Varinder Chaudhary said the penalty to be imposed was being calculated.

To check defacement across the city, especially by student organisations during the Panjab University elections, the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2013 had directed the municipal corporation to take corrective measures. The civic body had framed a policy under which for pasting banners, violators are penalised at the rate of Rs 100 per square ft daily; while for displaying unauthorised signboard, a violator has to shell out a fine of Rs 400 per day and Rs 72,000 for six months.

As per norms, there should not be any defacing of public property while no posters or banners or advertisements can be hung on the pillars or walls of any private SCOs or building. Banners or advertisements can be erected only at designated places after getting permission from the municipal corporation.
