Last year when Chandigarh golfer Harendra Gupta emerged as winner in the Crompton and Greaves Mumbai Open, the former caddie, adding a feather to his cap, also won the biggest prize money of his career. With Rs 16 Lakh going to the winner,Gupta got a big push to his career. And as the 2013 Crompton and Greaves Open starts today, the defending champion is hopeful of a good show.
It was the biggest win of my career. It came at the right moment for me and I played well on all the four days of the championship. The prize money was a big incentive and it helped me in planning things in my career, shared the 27-year-old Gupta.
Indian golfers, including Rashid Khan and Angad Cheema would be seen in action during the championship. The other domestic golfers set to tee off at the Rs one crore prize money event include Ashok Kumar,Mukesh Kumar,Shamim Khan,Digvijay Singh,Amandeep Johl, and Manav Jaini.
The field is a tough one and it will be a challenge. The course is playing well and I am confident of doing well. I won the title in the PGTI Feeder Tour in October and the win boosted my confidence a lot, shared the former caddie.
Asked if the event is scheduled properly with other Open championships happening around at the same time,Padamjit Sandhu,Director,PGTI,said,”If you see the first six to eight weeks or almost technically the three months of the year, there are back-to-back events in Asia,Europe and US. It is not only a challenge that PGTI faces.”
Adding further,he said,”The CG Open is one of the marquee events on the PGTI calendar and an important week on the tour in western India. The CG Open’s handsome prize purse of Rs one crore has contributed towards making the sport was just more competitive.
He further said they haven’t announced their calendar for 2014 as PGTI is waiting for Asia to announce theirs.
On losing sponsorship,Sandhu said,”Events going off,it is part and parcel of the sport. Barring a few international events for 2014 the domestic tour will look stronger for 2014.”
