The Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Chandigarh will be closed for flight operations from October 26 to November 7 due to essential runway maintenance. The closure, announced by the Chandigarh airport authorities, will facilitate resurfacing work to ensure safety and durability, impacting all commercial flights during this 13-day period.

The Chandigarh airport shutdown coincides with the peak festival season, when passenger traffic typically surges. Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara have begun notifying passengers, offering rebooking options to nearby airports like Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (250 km away) or Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (145 km). Travellers are advised to check airline websites or apps for updates.

The Chandigarh airport, a joint venture between the Airports Authority of India and Chandigarh International Airport Limited, handles domestic routes to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, among others and international flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi with 28 flights a day.

Monthly passenger figures in 2025 have ranged from approximately 346,000 to 387,000, translating to an average of 11,500-12,500 passengers every day

What Travelers Should Do

This routine maintenance closure follows a tumultuous spring for Indian aviation, marked by temporary shutdowns at 27-32 airports, including Chandigarh, in May 2025 due to “Operation Sindoor”. Following the Pahalgam terror attack Those restrictions grounded hundreds of flights until a ceasefire on May 10

The Chandigarh airport was completely closed for all air traffic from May 12 to May 31, 2018, to make way for the second phase of runway repairs, following an earlier closure for the first phase between February 12 and 26, 2018. There have also been maintenance-driven partial closures, such as five-hour daily closures for routine work in September 2021.
