FIVE JUVENILES managed to flee Snehalaya, a shelter home for destitute and abandoned children, at Maloya Tuesday, exposing once again the chinks in security. Although one of the boys returned later, the other four are still missing.

The police said the minors, who are all aged under 14 years, scaled the wall of Snehalaya around 6 pm and managed to escape. After discovering that the boys were missing, the staff launched a search but could not find them. A complaint was registered with the Maloya police.

Inspector Ram Rattan, Station House Officer of Maloya police station, said a search was on for the four missing boys.

The juveniles managed to escape despite there being security guards deployed at the shelter home.

This is not the first time that juveniles have escaped from the home. Several such incidents have been reported in the past. In January last year, two inmates went missing when they were taken for an outing to the Japanese Garden in Sector 31. In June, two boys fled the home, while a month later another inmate went missing.

Around 270 children are staying at the shelter home run by Chandigarh Administration. The Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights had conducted checks at the home in June this year after the escape of four juveniles. The children had then pointed out lack of several facilities.
