A farmer’s daughter, Baljot Kaur brought laurels for the Tricity as she topped in the medical stream in Class 12 with 98.4 per cent. Concerned due to rising cases of cancer in Punjab and other areas, she wants to specialise in oncology.

Baljot, a resident of Mohali, is a student of Shivalik Public school, Kharar. While her father Parminder Singh is a farmer, her mother Balbir Kaur is a homemaker.

“It’s not just that a child whose parents are doctors can pursue medical stream. My parents just told me to give my best in whatever interest I had. I had immense interest in biology and since my sister purused non-medical, she helped me with Physics and Chemistry,” Baljot told The Indian Express.

With a perfect 100 in Physical Education, Baljot scored 99 in Biology, 98 in Chemistry, 97 in Physics.

She has already appeared for NEET examination, which took place early this month. She believes in giving three to four hour self-study every day after school and tuitions.

“From 8 am to 3 pm, I would go to school. After an hour’s break, I had my tuitions from 4 pm to 7 pm and then I would do self-study from 8 pm to 12 midnight. My parents always inspired me and told me that I don’t need to compare my efforts with anyone else. I have to just give my 100 per cent in everything,” she added.

On the line she aims to specialise in, she said, “I want to do oncology because cases of cancer and tumor are increasing, especially in Punjab and surrounding areas. When I read articles, it really worries me and I feel if well-researched, I can do a lot to contribute in treating people suffering from cancer and tumor.”
