The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Tuesday night arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and a head constable (HC) of the Chandigarh police for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50000 from a man for not lodging a case of rape against him.
The accused policemen have been identified as ASI Randeep Singh and HC Ravinder Singh Rana. Sources said CBI sleuths arrested Rana from his residence in Sector 23 while Singh was arrested from Sector 24 police post.
Rana was posted at the Sector 11 police station and Singh at the Sector 24 police post.
The two were arrested under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act, 1988, and Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after Ranjeet Singh, a resident of Dhanas village, lodged ab FIR against the policemen.
Ranjeet Singh alleged in his complaint the two policemen told him they had received a complaint of rape against him and that he was being threatened that he will be implicated in the case if he doesn’t pay up. He also told CBI officers Rana was his tenant a few months ago.
Meanwhile, family members of Rana accused CBI officials of assaulting him at his house in Sector 23 Tuesday night. They have lodged a police complaint at the Sector 23 police post.
The accused policemen will be produced in a local CBI court Wednesday.
