Police have recovered Rs 75,000 cash and a major portion of the jewellery robbed from a retired executive engineer’s house in Sector 7 on Thursday. Police said the robbers probably travelled without tickets to Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, where they had hid the loot. Four of the accused have fled from Saharanpur and are believed to be hiding in Gonda now. A team of police officials has been sent to trace them out and searches continued till late evening on Saturday.

According to police officials,it appeared that the seven accused – Ram Vilas,Jagram,Raju,Moti,Vijay,Ganga and Jhanga, after decamping with the money and jewellery on Thursday, fled from the city and boarded the train from Chandigarh railway station,to Saharanpur. Three of the accused – Ram Vilas,Jagram and Raju – were arrested in the wee hours on Friday, while the others have fled to Gonda, where they originally hail from.

Police were able to find the location of the accused through surveillance of the mobile number of Raju’s brother, who worked as a domestic help at the Sector 7 residence of Jagannath, the retired executive engineer, sources said.

The UP Police helped them find Raju’s house in Saharanpur, where Ram Vilas,Jagram and Raju were found drunk. While police caught hold of Ram Vilas and Jagram,Raju tried to flee from the house. He scaled the wall of the house and also hit the police in-charge,Sector 7 and Assistant Sub Inspector Gurmail Singh with a brick, injuring him on the head. He was, however, caught by the raiding police party.

ASI Singh said that the woman,Madhur Malti, who was found tied in a bathroom, had told the police that one of the accused was wearing a chequered white shirt. The police had found Ram Vilas wearing the same shirt when they arrested him.
