A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan lost both his legs in a bid to catch a snatcher who ran away with his phone on board the New Delhi-Amritsar Shan-e-Punjab Express, the Government Railway Police (GRP) said.

The GRP said the BSF jawan, Aman Jaiswal, was travelling to Jalandhar when the incident took place at Damoria bridge in Ludhiana.

A GRP officer in Ludhiana said the jawan tried to chase the snatcher, but both fell off the train. While the snatcher managed to run away without being hurt, both legs of the jawan came under the train. His damaged legs were amputated at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), the officer said.

Inspector Palwinder Singh, SHO GRP police station Ludhiana, said that the unfortunate incident happened on Friday and efforts were on to identify and nab the accused.

An FIR was registered at the GRP Ludhiana police station under sections 304 (2) (snatching) and 311 (committing robbery) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
