In a jolt to the Aam Aadmi Party, the BJP’s Harpreet Babla Thursday won the high-stake Chandigarh Mayoral polls against AAP candidate Prem Lata. While Harpreet Babla got 19 votes, Prem Lata got 17 votes.

As many as 36 votes, including that of Member of Parliament Manish Tewari, were polled during the elections which were recorded on camera. Tewari is an ex-officio member of the House. The AAP and Congress, who are in alliance, had 20 votes while the Bharatiya Janata Party had 16 votes.

The voting through secret ballot began at 11 am under the supervision of Justice Jaishree Thakur, retired judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court, who was appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee the elections.

The Chandigarh mayoral elections for the posts of mayor, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor were held in the Assembly Hall of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

Just 30 minutes before the voting began, Mayor Kuldeep Kumar who was booked by the Chandigarh police Wednesday in an alleged cheating case, was granted anticipatory bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Had he been arrested, he wouldn’t have been able to cast his vote.
