Bhattal shifting to new house in Sec 2

Finally, former Punjab chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal is shifting to her new house — number 8 in Sector 2 —behind the house she currently occupies.

The move follows an ultimatum given by the Punjab and Haryana High Court that had ordered the completion of the Punjab government’s eviction proceedings against Bhattal within six weeks starting April 27.

Bhattal has been living in house number 46,Sector 2,which is right next to the chief minister’s residence for the past two decades. Since 2007 she has been living here in her capacity as the leader of the Opposition. In 2012,the house was allotted to Sunil Jakhar, the new leader of the Opposition, and Bhattal was asked to shift out. However, despite all efforts of the government, she refused to shift, citing “security” reasons.

In May,Bhattal was allotted house number 8 in Sector 2 from Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s pool, keeping in mind her demand to stay within the high-security ring around the Chief Minister’s residence. House number 8 had been allotted to Cabinet minister Gulzar Singh Ranike who did not want to shift out of his house in Sector 39.

Bhattal’s staff has been shifting the household items to the new house in Gypsies and other vehicles since Thursday. Since the distance between the two houses is not much, the staff says they managed to make several trips in a day to shift the household items which have been packed.

Bhattal could not be contacted despite repeated attempts but her staff says she is setting the new house and the whole process of shifting could take another few days.
