Family members of jailed social media influencer Bhana Sidhu have come out against the police saying that they were not present at the spot where the Punjab Police have accused them of attacking a police party on February 3.

However, Bhana Sidhu’s sisters claimed that they did not attend the protest. One of them, Kiranpal Kaur, who is a government school teacher, claimed that she was in school on the day of the protest, while the younger sister Sukhpal Kaur stated that she was at home all day.

Kot Dunna village head Sarabjit Singh Sarba, who was also named in the FIR, said that he was under detention at a police station along with some other persons who were also booked along with Bhana Sidhu’s family.

Bhana Sidhu’s father Bikar Singh, brother Amana Singh, sisters Kiranpal Kaur and Sukhpal Kaur, gangster-turned political activist Lakha Sidhana and others were booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for attacking a police party and disrupting the police in performing their duty.

The police registered the case at the Dhanaula station around 5.30 pm on February 3 – a day when protesters clashed with the police at various places in their attempt to reach Punjab chief minister’s residence at Sangrur.

The First Information Report is registered for the clash with police, which allegedly involved Bhana Sidhu’s family, sarpanch (village head) and Lakha Sidhana during their journey from Badbar Toll Plaza to Sangrur.

Bhana Sidhu was arrested on January 21 in a snatching case, sparking allegations that he was facing police action because he was a critic of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

Three hours after the case was registered, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jaskarn Singh had reached out to protesters and promised to resolve the issue of Bhana Sidhu’s arrest till February 10. He had also promised to release all the protesters arrested or detained on February 3.

“The government has booked those people who are close to Bhana Sidhu. But it is also true that his sisters did not attend the protest and the sarpanch and some others named in the FIR were already in police detention. How can they attend a protest and attack a police party?” Lakha Sidhana asked.

Massive crowd had turned up on January 29 and February 3 to support Bhana Sidhu against the four fresh cases registered against him. Protesters were alleging that Bhana Sidhu was implicated in false cases as he had turned to be a critic of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
