Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who was shifted to the Fortis Hospital in Mohali Friday evening after he complained of exhaustion and low heart rate, will carry out his official duties and also oversee flood relief work from the hospital bed.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia, who is in charge of Punjab, visited Mann at the hospital on Saturday and said his condition improved. “He is in high spirits. His pulse has also normalised. Yesterday, his pulse was low at 44. He had suffered an electrolyte imbalance. Now he is doing fine,” he said.
Mann, who fell ill after visiting flood-affected areas in the state, had been indisposed since Thursday morning. On Friday, he deferred a Cabinet meeting called to review the flood situation and take measures to mitigate people’s hardship.
Sisodia said the chief minister was concerned about the flood situation across the state. “He was telling me that he will meet the officers at the hospital itself. He is worried that the state is reeling under floods. People need relief, and later the state will also need help to recover from the damage,” the AAP leader added.
On Friday, the hospital said the chief minister was under observation and his pulse rate had improved. “Our medical team continues to closely monitor his condition,” the statement said.
On Thursday, Mann did not accompany AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal to Sultanpur Lodhi, one of the worst flood-hit areas in the state. Sources in his camp said he was unwell and was advised “complete bed rest by the doctors attending to him.” Kejriwal was visiting the state 17 days after the disaster struck, and amid a controversy that the top AAP leadership from Delhi was missing on the ground as the state grappled with floods.
Kejriwal visited Mann at his official residence and proceeded to Sultanpur Lodhi with AAP state president Aman Arora before leaving for Gujarat, where the party is scheduled to organise a rally on Sunday.
In Sultanpur Lodhi, the AAP chief told reporters, “Mann sahib was to accompany me. He was amid floods for two-three days. He did not eat anything. Now, he is unwell. I told him to rest for two-three days. He is lying down and on (an IV) drip. Still, while lying down also, he is thinking about the people of Punjab. In the morning, he had a discussion with me on how relief is to be extended.”
