“SHAHEED-E-AZAM” Bhagat Singh’s philosophy was as relevant today as it was at the time of his martyrdom, said Rana Kanwar Pal Singh, Speaker, Punjab Assembly, Thursday. Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Khatkar Kalan to mark the freedom fighter’s 110th birth anniversary, Singh said, “We are proud that the soil of Punjab gave birth to such a great warrior whose role in the struggle for independence became a source of inspiration for all Indians.” Khatkar Kalan is also the birth place of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.
“We have not totally failed in making a country that Bhagat Singh dreamt of because India, in its 70 years of independence, has been recognised as the world’s largest democracy besides making tremendous progress when compared to other countries in the Asian region,” he said.
He said Bhagat Singh’s vision of equality had been “achieved to a large extent” with the abolition of princely states and merging them into a democratic setup, but added that to fully realise the thoughts and dreams of Bhagat Singh, we all have to perform our duties to eradicate poverty and cut the gap between the poor and the rich.
During an informal meeting with journalists in SBS Nagar, Rana K P Singh said a museum in memory of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh would be completed before March 23 next year and all other basic requirements of his native village Khatkar Kala would be fulfilled on priority.
