BARC approves sites for two biomethanation plants in the city

Chandigrah is soon likely to have biomethanation plants at two locations — one each in Shanti Kunj and Industrial Area. The approval for the sites was given by a team from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) that visited the city. The plants would be able to process waste which is at present not being accepted by the Garbage Processing Plant at Dadumajra.

Mayor Subhash Chawla along with two other councillors and officials had visited a similar plant set up by BARC near Mumbai. With the concept having found favour with the team,it was decided that such plants could be set up in Chandigarh. Four sites had been identified by the Municipal Corporation.

As the team from BARC saw the sites, two were shortlisted where the plants could be set up. While one site is in Shanti Kunj in Sector 16,the other is in Industrial Area,Phase I. The proposed plant in Shanti Kunj would be able to cater to the horticulture waste generated from the adjoining sectors where there is an extensive green cover. With a large number of hotels and malls in Industrial Area and Sector 26 as well as presence of Grain Market, the other biomethanation plant would cater to this area.

The garbage collected from the city is taken to the garbage processing plant. However, certain kind of garbage, including horticulture waste and food waste,is not accepted by the plant. At present, this is being taken to the dumping ground. With Chandigarh being a landlocked city and the dumping ground filling up fast, there is no alternate site available. Emphasis would have to be laid on reducing the waste produced.

Mayor Subhash Chawla says,“The sites have been approved by BARC. The agenda would be taken up for discussion at the meeting of the MC House scheduled for November 29. The proposal is for setting up smaller plants in close vicinity to where these are required. This would ensure that the time and money spent in transporting garbage from one part of the city to the other is saved. The plants do not emit any foul smell,so the residents in the surrounding area would face no problem.”

The civic body proposes to set up smaller plants of 5 metric tonne capacity.

The BARC team asked

the civic body to initiate the tendering process. A discussion on this would be held at the meeting of the General House. BARC would also sign a Memorandum of
