Audio-visual sensitisation lecture held on heritage of Chandigarh

While Tourism Director Kavita Singh was the chief guest, over 150 government school teachers attended the lecture.

According to Deepika Gandhi, Assistant Professor at CCA, the main aim of the lecture was to train teachers so that they could sensitise students to the need to preserve the unique heritage of Chandigarh. “Chandigarh is a city rich in heritage. That is why Chandigarh College of Architecture has started with this sensitisation drive to make the people of the city better understand its history,” she said.

To mark Corbusier’s death anniversary, the college has planned sensitisation lectures, interactive sessions with architectural experts, a heritage walk and other such events for citizen awareness. These activities will be organised in the city over the next few months.

The college authorities are also planning to release a booklet on the heritage of Chandigarh on August 27, which marks Corbusier’s 50th death anniversary.

“A small booklet of about 30 pages will be introduced in all government schools for students of class sixth and above. The idea is just to make students more aware of the history and basic planning of Chandigarh,” Gandhi said.
The booklet will, however, not be introduced as a part of the curriculum. To begin with, the college is planning to distribute about 50 copies of the booklet to all government schools across Chandigarh. “We do not want to burden students by introducing this as a part of the syllabus. We just want the students to be aware of Chandigarh’s heritage,” Gandhi added.

A final decision in this regard is awaited from the director of public instructions.

Stressing the importance of Chandigarh’s heritage, CCA Principal Pradeep Bhagat said, “We are just committed to spreading awareness about the importance of Chandigarh and Corbusier’s contribution to heritage at a national and international level.”
