The raging waters from the Sutlej river have inundated several acres of agricultural fields at village Sasrali Colony of Ludhiana district.
As the Sutlej continued to be in spate Thursday, residents of the village located on the banks of Sutlej rallied together to strengthen the dhussi bundh at Sasrali, placing hundreds of sandbags.
Local AAP MLA and cabinet minister Hardeep Singh Mundian also reached the spot and got clicked while helping the villagers in strengthening the bundh. He carried sandbags and huge stones on his head to help the villagers in their efforts.
The AAP Punjab, in its post on X, said that Mundian “performed sewa” of strengthening the embankments at Sasrali along with villagers and administrative officials.
The Ludhiana district administration said that Indian Army along with NDRF and villagers are working to strengthen the embankment to avert any breach.
The administration said that there has been no breach so far at Sasrali and people should stay away from rumours.
The village continues to live in fear and has been spending sleepless nights since almost a week with Sutlej in spate and more water being released from the Bhakra dam.
Manveer Singh Dhaliwal, a local Congress leader, said that over 100 acres of fields have been inundated in Sasrali Colony. “The river water has reached some fields and damaged around 100 acres in Sasrali and Boothgarh villages. However, the exact damage is yet to be assessed. However, the dhussi bundh is safe and there is no loss of life,” he said.
Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain said that strengthening efforts are underway on a war footing to fortify the structure. The district administration has deployed comprehensive measures to mitigate flood risks and ensure resident safety, including a stockpile of one lakh sandbags and substantial stone supplies sourced from Ropar and Himachal Pradesh.
The dedicated teams from multiple departments are stationed at critical points along the bundh in Ludhiana, maintaining round-the-clock monitoring to manage the situation which is under control. He added that to support affected farmers, the administration has ordered a thorough assessment of crop losses, with a commitment to provide full compensation once the situation stabilises.
As tension grew with increasing water speed, Ludhiana Lok Sabha MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also reached the spot to inspect the ongoing work.
