In a major setback to four selected candidates for the post of Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Administration and University School of Open Learning (USOL),the PU Syndicate has rejected their appointments in the meeting on Tuesday. While the Syndicate had taken the decision in lieu of its earlier decision taken in the meeting on December 15 last year, the four selected members have alleged they have become victims of the tussle between the Vice-Chancellor (V-C) and Syndicate.
The university had advertised for four posts of Assistant Professors, two each in the Department of Public Administration and University School of Open Learning (USOL) last year. While, the interviews were held on December 19 and 20 as per the prescribed procedures, the Syndicate decided to reject the appointments later.
The appointments had to be rejected as the V-C had conducted those appointments in violation of the decisions taken by the Syndicate, said Ashok Goyal,a Syndicate member.
I’m not to be blamed for this, said Professor Grover. I conducted the appointments because the university was in need of staff and it had advertised for these posts. I wanted to fill up the posts, but if the Syndicate has decided to reject the appointments, then what can be done?
While, both the V-C and the Syndicate members expressed concern over the fate of the candidates and agreed that the candidates are not at fault, none of them is ready to shoulder the responsibility.
Meanwhile, the selected candidates have alleged that the interview calls were sent before the Syndicate meeting on December 15 and therefore, the decision of the Syndicate was not binding on the interviews which were already fixed before the syndicate meeting. They held no discussion was held with the selection committee and the appointments were rejected because the V-C had conducted interviews despite the Syndicates decision.
