Radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh, currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act, has declared assets worth Rs 1,000 — the balance in his bank account, according to the affidavit he has submitted while filing nominations from Khadoor Sahib as an Independent candidate.
Amritpal, 31, filled in his nomination papers on Thursday in Dibrugarh jail. His papers were filed by his uncle in Tarn Taran.
According to his poll affidavit, the self-styled chief of ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit has Rs 1,000 in an account in a SBI branch in Amritsar. Other than this, Singh does not have any moveable or immovable assets.
His wife Kirandip Kaur owns movable assets worth Rs 18.37 lakh, including Rs 20,000 cash in hand, gold jewellery worth Rs 14 lakh and 4,000 GBP (pound) equivalent to Rs 4,17,440, in an account at Revolut Ltd, London, UK.
Amritpal has been shown as dependent on parents while his spouse is a British citizen. She earlier worked as a language interpreter at National Health Services in the UK, but is now a homemaker, as per the affidavit.
Amritpal has declared that 12 criminal cases are pending against him though he has not been convicted in any case. His educational qualification is matric which he cleared from a school in Pheruman in Amritsar in 2008.
Earlier in the day, Punjab government informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that it has made arrangements for Amritpal to file his nomination. The state government’s reply came on a petition filed by Amritpal seeking temporary release for seven days to file nomination papers for contesting the Lok Sabha elections.
When the matter came up before the bench of Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj, Punjab Deputy Advocate General Arjun Sheoran submitted, “Two sets of nomination forms and other paperwork were filled in and signed by the detenue (Amritpal) on May 9. The detenue was allowed to meet his proposer and advocate at Dibrugarh Central Jail on May 9.”
“The Superintendent of Dibrugarh Central Jail will administer oath to the detenue as per the provisions of law including Handbook for Candidate, 2023, and issue certificate for receipt of oath and send original form of oath to returning officer of Khadoor Sahib,” he added.
The high court disposed of the petition filed by Amritpal as infructuous. A detailed order is yet to be released.
Amritpal, who styled himself after slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was arrested in Moga’s Rode village on April 23 last year following an over a month-long manhunt.
The Khalistan sympathiser had escaped the police net in Jalandhar district on March 18, switching vehicles and changing appearances.
The Punjab Police had launched the crackdown after the February 23 Ajnala incident last year in which Amritpal Singh and his supporters, some of them brandishing swords and guns, broke through barricades and barged into the police station on the outskirts of Amritsar city, and clashed with police for the release of Lovepreet Singh Toofan, one of his aides.
He and his associates were booked under several criminal cases related to spreading disharmony among classes, attempting to murder, attacking police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.
