A major tragedy was averted in Jalandhar on Monday evening after ammonia gas leaked at a factory on the Sports and Surgical Complex. Acting swiftly, the fire brigade and the district administration safely evacuated nearly 35 workers trapped inside the factory.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Aggarwal said the administration received information around 5.15 pm about the gas leak from the safety release valve at Metro Milk Products. Within five minutes, the fire brigade team reached the spot and immediately began the rescue operation. “Around 35 workers were successfully evacuated through the emergency exit, and the situation was brought under control within an hour,” the DC said.

“To further secure the site and prevent any fresh leakage, a special technical team from the Verka Milk Plant was called in. The team shut down the pressure lines of the air compressor, after which the situation was declared fully under control,” the DC said. “There were nearly 40 people in the factory, and many were evacuated from the rear side by breaking a wall. Those who fell ill due to exposure were shifted to private hospitals,” the DC said.

Fire department officials confirmed that some nearby residential areas were also affected by the gas leak, but a timely evacuation prevented any major damage. Cranes and other equipment were used during the rescue, while people in critical condition were immediately rushed to hospitals, fire officials said.
