Opposing the proposed water policy of the UPA government, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Tuesday claimed that the move to privatise rivers and canals and abolish subsidies on irrigation and potable water will destroy the agrarian economy of Punjab.

“The new water policy of Congress-led UPA government would destroy the agrarian economy of Punjab besides robbing the rightful riparian rights,” SAD president and Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal said in a statement here.

He said handing over the rights of all natural and man-made water resources to the multi-national companies will make the country’s 1.2 billion people “their slave for all times to come”.

“The new water policy was tailor made to destroy the economy of farmers of Punjab making them dependent on private sector even for water and further pushing them in debt trap,” Badal said.

Alleging that the Congress-led UPA government “while not being satisfied with the loot of Rs.1.76 lakh crore in 2G scam, has now decided to loot the only available natural resource of the country by introducing a new National Water Policy that calls for privatisation of water delivery services and maximising the water prices.

He said the new policy also “exposes the false promise of free power” of Congress leader Amarinder Singh in the election bound state.
