The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Mohali’s several sectors, which has been actively opposing the construction of a new dumping collection and processing unit alongside the old dumping ground in Sector 74, met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj for the second time on Monday.
The delegation, which comprises resident welfare associations of sectors 74, 90, 91, and 92, submitted a memorandum detailing that the Punjab government and Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) are planning to set up processing plants and garbage collection centres in Chhappar Chiri and Sector 74. The memorandum was presented on behalf of the JAC by its general secretary Avtar Singh.
“The Jathedar Sahib issued clear instructions to Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh that all waste must be removed from the Sector 74 dumping ground immediately and no fresh garbage should be dumped at any new site,” the committee’s spokesperson Amandeep Singh Slaich said.
According to the JAC, the Jathedar was firm in his directive, stating that the work must be completed within one month, otherwise he himself will visit the site after a month to review the situation. He also ordered that formal letters be issued to all concerned departments in this regard.
The Jathedar also collected the full case record and high court documents submitted by the committee and assured support. “We stand with you. On this sacred land of martyrs, no such activity will be allowed. No garbage will ever be dumped here,” the spokesperson said quoting Gargajj.
Slaich further pointed out that from a legal perspective, the site is completely unsuitable for waste disposal since it lies near DPS School, residential and commercial areas, and the historic Gurdwara Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Ji (Chhappar Chiri) as well as the Fateh Burj memorial. He stressed that dumping waste here is socially, religiously, and legally unacceptable, noting that the JAC had already won a related case in the high court.
It also quoted the Jathedar as clarifying that, in the future, “no garbage dumping will be permitted near heritage monuments or historic sites.”
When contacted, Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh confirmed receiving a call from the Akal Takht Jathedar.
“He asked me to ensure removal of the garbage from the Sector 74 dumping ground. The high court has also issued directions in this matter, and I have assured him that within the next 15–20 days, the old dumping ground will be cleared,” the MLA said.
