Nearly 100 advocates staged a protest inside the courtroom of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Chandigarh on Wednesday against the recent shift of traffic challan settlement from the traditional court-based process to an online-only mechanism.

The advocates said the new system has created widespread inconvenience for both lawyers and the general public.

As per existing rules, traffic challans pending for more than three months are required to be transferred automatically to the court for settlement. However, this process has not been functioning, resulting in pending challans remaining stuck online without any judicial remedy.

Frustrated by the growing backlog and lack of clarity, the group of lawyers reached the CJM’s courtroom in the afternoon seeking an immediate resolution. When no satisfactory response was provided, the advocates sat on a protest inside the courtroom for nearly half an hour.

Following the agitation, the CJM along with the executive staff assured the protesting advocates that the matter would be resolved within two days after consultation with the Sessions Judge, who is currently on leave.

Meanwhile, the advocates have warned that if the issue remains unaddressed, they will resume their protest inside the courtroom.

Advocate Puneet Chhabra said, “We protested only to ensure that the system works for everyone, not against them. We will not stay silent when a faulty process causes hardship to thousands.”
