To address shortage of doctors and improve patient care, PGIMER has received approval to create 73 new posts of Senior Residents (SRs). The decision was made during the recent Governing Body meeting of the institute. The newly approved posts are for the non-DM/MCh category across various departments.
The Governing Body has instructed the institute to send the proposal to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare along with the financial implications. Once the proposal receives clearance from the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance, the recruitment process will begin.
As per the PGI administration, the new recruitments will help reduce the burden on existing doctors and minimise delays in patient care. Currently, several departments are functioning with limited staff, resulting in longer waiting periods for patients.
PGIMER is a premier referral hospital where patients from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir seek treatment. Given the rising patient load, almost 10,000 OPD patients daily, the need to increase the number of doctors has become urgent.
Prior to this, approval was also granted for six new Senior Resident (SR) posts in the High Dependency Unit (HDU). For over a year, the department had been demanding additional SR posts to cater to the increasing patient load in the Paediatric HDU of the Advanced Eye Centre (AEC).
The unit deals with critical cases such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), other retinal diseases, cataract, and glaucoma in newborn and young children.
