In the 70th convocation of Panjab University (PU) on Saturday, women have shown their potential by claiming 71 per cent of all degrees and 80 per cent of gold medals.
“497 PhD were facilitated to 325 women and 172 men. As many as 72 undergraduate degrees were given to 62 women and 10 men, and 313 postgraduate degrees were given to 239 women and 74 men toppers,” Renu Vig, vice chancellor, PU, said.
Meanwhile, 107 undergraduate students, including 96 women and 11 men won gold medals. As many as 137 postgraduates: 101 women and 36 men also bagged gold.
From Punjab, 182 scholars were awarded Phd. Haryana follows Punjab with 115 scholars and is followed by Himachal Pradesh with 70 Phd scholars. 73 scholars from Chandigarh and one from Ethiopia were also awarded with PhD.
Meanwhile, four personalities were awarded the PU Rattan awards. PU Gyan Rattan was given to author and educationalist, Dr Rattan Singh Jaggi. While PU Vigyan Rattan was conferred on Professor Veena Tandon, a leading scientist and parasitologist, PU Sahitya Ratna was given to Irshad Kamil, a playback writer, poet and lyricist. PU Udyog Ratna was given to Rakesh Bharti Mittal, vice chairman of Bharti Enterprises.
In her address, the vice chancellor narrated many achievements of the PU in different fields. She said that the PU is placed eighth in national rankings by Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), eighth in Best Global Universities in India by US News.
The university has also found mention in the top 200 universities of Asia in the Times Higher Education ASIA University Rankings in 2022. Vig said that PU has secured 25th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022.
