Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday announced that if voted to power in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress would conduct a caste census in the state. Explaining why a caste census is required, her said: “After conducting the caste census we will be able to find out which category of people are poor, backward, landless and uneducated. That’s why we will conduct it.”

The united Opposition, which has found common ground in the social justice plank to take on the BJP, has been demanding a caste census. Kharge, who was addressing a public rally in Sagar district in the Bundelkhand region, also announced the construction of a university in memory of Sant Ravidas, the 14th-century mystic poet and social reformer.

On August 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of a Rs 100-crore Sant Ravidas temple. Kharge said PM Modi only remembers Sant Ravidas during elections. “Modi’s government has been in power for nine years, and Shivraj-ji for 18 years. Why is Ravidas-ji remembered now? Elections are approaching…”

Kharge also attacked PM Modi over the Manipur crises. “…Modi doesn’t go there (Manipur), doesn’t speak about it, even in Parliament, Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha. For three months riots are taking place (in the state}, women are raped and paraded and Modi is silent,” Kharge said.

On Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks that the state shed its “BIMARU” tag under the BJP, Kharge said: “ In MP, one man is ruling for 18 years, it is still backward. Modi-ji ruled for over 13 years in Gujarat, now nearing 10 years in Delhi. What has Modi done? In Gujarat, children are malnourished. The state has the worst record in providing nutritious food in the country.”

Kharge said, “I want to ask Amit Shah, the person who urinated on the tribal man, which party does he belong to? You can’t protect the tribals and Scheduled Castes people… You insulted him (tribal man).”

“We won MP (in the last Assembly polls). We had a majority. But they snatched it away.”
