Four children were killed and four others injured in a village in the Panchmahal district on Thursday when a wall at a deserted chemical factory collapsed into huts following a heavy spell of rain, officials said.

Two families of labourers — residing in the huts – were hit by the tragedy when the wall at the Shanmukha Agro-Chemical unit fell down in the Chandrapura village of Halol taluka. The families were living in an open plot near the factory premises, according to police.

While labourer Ambaram Bhuriya and his wife Parvati lost their three children, his neighbour Jitendra Damor lost his five-year-old son Chiriram. Bhuriya’s three children who were killed have been identified as Abhishek (4), Gungun (2) and Muskaan (5).

Bhuriya’s wife Parvati (26) and Damor’s wife Hira (25) and their younger son Meet (2) were left injured.

The police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated a probe into the incident.

“The wall collapsed on their huts during heavy rain. Four children under the age of five were killed on the spot after being crushed under the debris. The others were rushed for treatment,” Superintendent of Police Himanshu Solanki said.

The labourers are employed with the dust processing unit of the Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Limited. They hail from the Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh.
