A 21-year-old member of the housekeeping staff at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore has been arrested by the police in connection with the theft of gold jewels worth Rs10 lakh from the room of a scientist who was boarding at the institute’s guest house.
The accused youth, Mahesh Kumar, was attached to a housekeeping firm contracted to provide housekeeping services and had been deployed at IISc over the last two months, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division) Sandeep Patil said. He allegedly used a duplicate key to gain access to the scientist’s room to steal jewels worth Rs 10 lakh.
The scientist, Delhi based Vidya Raghunathan, who noticed on November 7 that her belongings had gone missing from her room, had filed a complaint with the police about the theft. After finding no signs of a break in at the room of the scientists the police picked up members of the house keeping staff for interrogation and one of the staff members Mahesh Kumar confessed to the crime. He has been arrested and all the stolen property has been recovered, police said.
