Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are expected to participate in the Karnataka leg of Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress state president D K Shivakumar said on Friday.

The yatra taken out by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi across the length of the country will enter the state on September 30 at Gundlupet in Chamarajanagar district. The dates when Sonia and Priyanka will participate in the yatra will be announced in the coming days, Shivakumar said.

“In Karnataka, Congress president Sonia Gandhi may attend the Bharat Jodo Yatra, and Priyanka Gandhi will also be joining separately,” Congress general secretary K C Venugopal told reporters after a review meeting on the preparations of the yatra in the state.

During the course of the yatra in the poll-bound state, Rahul is scheduled to participate in a programme at Badanavalu in Nanjangud taluk of Mysuru district, renowned for its Khadi and Gramodyog Centre established in 1927. There will be a two-day break for the yatra coinciding with the Dasara celebrations.

A massive public rally in Ballari district and interactions with youth, women, members of civil society, tribals and farmers are planned.

Shivakumar declined to comment on some Congress leaders’ demand that Rahul be made the party’s national president. Though many leaders want him to lead the party, the decision “is left to him”, the state chief told reporters.
