An email was sent to the Mangaluru International Airport recently threatening an explosion on the premises. According to officials, the mail was received on November 30 at around 10 am from an ID “Akram Vaikar” claiming a bomb had been planted at the airport.
They said CISF personnel and airport staff conducted an extensive search across the premises, and that no explosives were found. A case was filed at the Bajpe Police Station, and an investigation was launched, they added.
The email reportedly sought the withdrawal of charges against expelled DMK leader Jaffer Sadiq, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in an international drugs trafficking nexus, and Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, film producer and the wife of Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.
It also demanded the release of S Maran, the leader of the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army (TNLA), currently in Trichy Central Jail. In 2019, Maran was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in connection with the Andimadam Police Station attack that took place in 1997.
Authorities noted similarities with a prior bomb threat on October 25 targeting three Tirupati hotels, which also referred to Sadiq and Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi. The recurrence of Tamil Nadu-related demands has led investigators to suspect connections to residents of that state.
