Karnataka Govt all set to restart Indira Canteen, BBMP holds meeting

According to officials, of the 175 Indira Canteens in Bengaluru, 163 are operational and 12 (6 in RR Nagar and 3 in South zone) are closed.

The Indira Canteens, one of the popular projects of the previous Congress dispensation in Karnataka for the urban poor, is all set to get a new lease of life with the government making preparations to make them operational.

On Wednesday, in a virtual meeting held by Tushar Girinath, Chief Commissioner, BBMP, with zonal commissioners and other officials, it was decided to submit a report about the present condition of the canteens, which provide food at subsidised rates.

According to officials, of the 175 Indira Canteens in Bengaluru, 163 are operational and 12 (6 in RR Nagar and 3 in South zone) are closed. Officials were directed to get these canteens cleaned and also to appoint pourakarmikas to dispose of the garbage.

Special Commissioner (Health) Thrilok Chandra K V directed the officials to ensure quality and healthy food is provided to the public and to prepare a proposal for the maintenance of Indira Canteens. Besides, zonal commissioners have been directed to restart mobile Indira Canteens and to submit a report.

During the first press conference of his second term, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his intention to revive the neglected Indira Canteens. Seeking details about their current state, he announced that they would undergo a transformation and reopen within a month.

According to a source in BBMP, breakfast will now cost Rs 10 up from Rs 5, and the menu will be expanded to include more items. Officials have also been instructed to incorporate nutritious food options, and to make dinner available based on demand.
