The Karnataka government has ordered a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe into the alleged use of derogatory words by BJP legislator CT Ravi against Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar.
Home Minister G Parameshwara told reporters in Hubballi Tuesday that the CID was ordered to verify the truth in the allegations raised by the minister. “He (Ravi) is denying he has used the (derogatory) word. However, the statements of other members of the House are contradicting this. There are witnesses,” he said.
Hebbalkar and Ravi got into a heated exchange on the floor of the Legislative Council on Thursday, the last day of the Winter Session, amid a brief adjournment following protests over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr B R Ambedkar.
During the incident, Ravi allegedly used a derogatory word against the minister. Soon after, the MLC was confronted by Hebbalkar’s staff who objected to the word. Multiple complaints were filed over the incident, and Congress MLAs moved a privilege motion in the Legislative Council over the “insult” at Hebbalkar.
On Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti terming the issue a ‘closed chapter’, Parameshwara said that while the chairman will do his job, the police will have to perform their duty.
Meanwhile, Ravi has demanded that the government-ordered CID probe be monitored by a sitting judge as investigating officials could be manipulated with a lure of better postings.
“Even if CID investigates the case, let it investigate under a sitting judge. The report should be submitted to him… Even if a judicial probe is ordered, then he (the judge) won’t go investigate personally. He will look into all circumstantial issues. He won’t hide the records or manipulate it,” Ravi said.
When investigators are under pressure and they “look for a posting at a good place, then justice is denied,” he added.
