Hours after former Karnataka minister and BJP MLC C P Yogeshwar joined the Congress, the ruling party on Wednesday announced him as the candidate for the Channapatna Assembly constituency bypoll, scheduled for November 13. The Congress also announced Lok Sabha MP E Tukaram’s wife Annapurna as the candidate from the Sandur constituency.

Bypolls are scheduled to be held in three constituencies, with Shiggaon being the third. These elections have been necessitated due to the resignations of sitting MLAs from the respective segments: Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H D Kumaraswamy from Channapatna, Lok Sabha MP and former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai from Shiggaon, and MLA Tukaram from Sandur. They resigned to contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and all three of them won.

The BJP has already announced its candidates from Shiggaon and Sandur. In Shiggaon, Basavaraj Bommai’s son Bharath Bommai will test the political waters, while Bangaru Hanumanthu is the candidate from Sandur, a Scheduled Tribes-reserved constituency.

The Congress is yet to announce its candidate from Shiggaon. The BJP had ceded the Channapatna seat to its alliance partner Janata Dal (S), prompting Yogeshwar’s rebellion. Yogeshwar is a five-time MLA from Channapatna but had lost the last two elections on a BJP ticket against Kumaraswamy of the JD(S). Speculations are still rife that Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy could be the JD(S) candidate from Channapatna.

At Shiggaon, Vaishali Kulkarni, daughter of Congress MLA and former minister Vinay Kulkarni, has emerged as a dark horse.
