Karnataka Horticulture Minister Munirathna was Sunday booked for allegedly distributing sarees to voters in an alleged violation of the model code of conduct ahead of the Assembly elections. Other than Munirathna, who represents the Rajrajeshwari Nagar Assembly constituency, the police have also booked BJP leader V C Chandru and two unknown persons.
On Sunday, a team leader of the Election Commission of India’s flying squad, Manoj Kumar, filed the complaint after they found five sarees with Munirathna’s photo on it. The sarees were thrown on the roadside near the Global Academy of Technology in Bengaluru’s Rajarajeshwari Nagar.
The Rajarajeshwari Nagar police have filed a case under sections 171 (b) and 171 (e) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 123 (1) and 123 (2) of the Representation of the People Act.
This is the second FIR filed by poll officials against Munirathna after the model code of conduct came into place in Karnataka. In the first case, Munirathna was booked for his alleged hate speech against Christians in March and was charged with promoting enmity among people.
Before this, Congress MLA Sowmya Reddy’s driver Ramachandrappa had been booked after an FIR was registered by Election Commission officials. The flying squad had caught Reddy’s car near a check post in which they had seized books containing the leader’s image. The Tilak Nagar police had registered an FIR against Ramchandrappa.
