BJP MLC Baburao Chinchansur joined the Congress at Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president D K Shivakumar’s residence Wednesday. The leader from the Koli Kabbaliga community had quit the BJP, which he had joined in 2018, a day ago.
He is the second BJP legislator to quit the party this month. Another BJP MLC, Puttanna, had quit the party earlier this month after alleging widespread corruption in the state BJP government.
Chinchansur had played a key role in defeating Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge in the 2019 Lok Sabha election after joining the saffron party. He was elected as an MLC from the BJP in 2022, following the resignation of C M Ibrahim from the Congress.
Before being elected MLC, Chinchansur was a five-time MLA — three times from Chittapur constituency and twice from Gurmitkal. He had lost to JD(S) candidate Nagangouda Kandkur in the 2018 Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters after joining Congress, Chinchansur said he would work to ensure that the party secures more than 25 seats in Kalyana Karnataka districts in the upcoming election. “The region is a bastion of (AICC president Mallikarjun) Kharge. The BJP is trying hard to make a breakthrough,” he said, adding that he would show his strength in the coming election.
According to sources, Chinchansur is looking to contest from the Gurmitkal constituency.
