Due to the impact of Cyclon Fengal, districts in south interior Karnataka are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru and the surrounding districts until Tuesday, December 3, forecasting that some areas may receive rainfall exceeding 100 mm.

Due to Cyclone Fengal, the city has experienced overcast conditions for the past two days, accompanied by light showers. Temperatures have remained below normal, with Bengaluru recording a maximum temperature of 22.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday and a minimum of 19.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday morning.

Minimum temperatures in central Bengaluru are projected to be around 17 to 18 degrees Celsius in the coming days. In parts of North Karnataka, these temperatures could drop to around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius. As of 10.30 am on Sunday, rainfall was recorded in isolated areas of Bengaluru as well as in the neighbouring districts of Kolar, Chikkaballapur, and Bengaluru Rural.

During the ongoing Northeast monsoon season, Karnataka has experienced excess rainfall despite a lull in showers in November. From October 1 to November 30, the state recorded 209 mm of rainfall, compared to the normal amount of 173 mm, resulting in a 21 per cent increase. This surplus is primarily attributed to a significant amount of rain in October, as November saw a deficiency of 42 per cent in rainfall.

According to the IMD, Cyclone Fengal’s movement has been extremely slow even after landfall, and the storm has remained close to the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast since Saturday night.

“Cyclone Fengal moved south-westwards with a speed of 7 km/h during the past 6 hours. It is likely to move westwards slowly and weaken gradually into a deep depression over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next three hours,” the IMD said on Sunday morning.
