Rs 40,000-crore Covid procurement scam took place under BJP rule: MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal

The comments are part of the BJP MLA's attacks on BS Yediyurappa after the former CM succeeded in having his son appointed as the party's state chief.

In an embarrassment to the Opposition BJP in Karnataka, senior MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal on Tuesday alleged irregularities to the tune of Rs 40,000 crore in Covid-related procurement during BJP rule in the state. He also accused the Congress government of trying to cover up the scam.

Yatnal, known for his Hindutva stance, is a vocal critic of BJP Parliamentary Board member BS Yediyurappa. He alleged that the former chief minister had procured face masks worth Rs 45 for Rs 485 during his tenure.

“Ten thousand beds were rented by the government in Bengaluru. If they had procured new beds instead, they would have got twice the number of beds,” he alleged.

All the documents related to the issue are with the Public Accounts Committee, he said, adding that he was approached with an offer to head the committee under the Siddaramaiah government. “I told them that I would expose everything and they did not appoint me,” Yatnal said.

Instead, they appointed former minister C C Patil as head of the committee, he told reporters.

His comments are part of his attacks on Yediyurappa after the veteran Lingayat leader wrested control of the state BJP unit and succeeded in having his son and MLA BY Vijayendra appointed as its president.

That a majority of the office-bearers of the new party unit and opposition leader R Ashok are from the Yediyurappa camp has upset leaders from the rival faction headed by BJP general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh.

Corruption during the Covid pandemic was one of the key planks of the Congress ahead of the polls held in May. A commission of inquiry was formed under Justice Michael D’Cunha in August to investigate the alleged irregularities.
