Spread over 59.36 acres, the Hosakerehalli lake once symbolised the pristine environment. Today it not only receives sewage from a storm water drain but has also turned into a black spot.
Seven acres of the lake have been encroached on. According to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), six acres have been encroached by a private body and 0.26 acres by the government.

In an eponymous exhibition that opens at DAG, The Claridges on July 25, Giles Tillotson has put together several famed paintings of the time alongside maps depicting war positions and the Mysore cityscape sketched and painted during the period.

The BJP and JD (S) workers physically assaulted each other over the installation of flexes in view of the local temple fair on Saturday night. Local JD (S) leader Siraj and another person were injured in the incident.
An ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) camera was installed at various junctions across the city to alert traffic police whenever any vehicle offends the traffic rules.
A total of 20 ANPR cameras were installed in March at various junctions in the city, mainly in Central Business District areas, to help traffic police track vehicles against which fines for various violations are pending.
According to Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) BR Ravikanthe Gowda, the cameras aside from detecting vehicles with pending cases against them but also detect vehicles with suspicious number plates and those stolen.
Karnataka Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Bhamla Chavan said on Saturday, that the Karnataka State government would be launching a new cow adoption scheme on July 28 to encourage the adoption of cattle from goshalas, ANI reported.
Chavan said, "Our government is keen to start 'Punyakoti Dattu Yojana' for the first time in the country to encourage adoption by public and private organisations for the purpose of nurturing and rearing the cattle in cow sheds to preserve the herd. Basavaraja Bommai will complete one year as the Chief Minister on July 28 and the dedication ceremony will be held on the same day.''
"100 government goshalas are being started gradually and in all these Goshalas domestic and crossbred cattle, needy, exhausted, old, diseased, abandoned by farmers, male calves and cattle seized by court and police custody are being sheltered and nurtured," the Minister said.
The Bengaluru City police paid condolences to the officials who died in a road accident in Andhra Pradesh while on duty. The police officers were later identified as sub-inspector Avinash, police constable Anil Mulik and Maxwell, the driver of the vehicle.
The officers, who were posted at the Shivajinagar police station in Bengaluru, were sent on duty on a specific tip-off about contraband moving towards Bengaluru from Andhra Pradesh. The personnel were travelling in a private vehicle and on preliminary information, it appears the accident occurred at a barrier on the highway at Putalapattu in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

At least five members of a family died, while four others were injured when an unknown vehicle hit the Scorpio car they were travelling in, according to the police report.

In a traffic incident, two police officials of Bengaluru City who were in Andhra Pradesh for an investigation died after the car they were travelling hit the road median and toppled.
According to the police sources, the deceased are Avinash, police sub-inspector of Shivaji Nagar police station and constable Anil. About four police officials who were in the car has been injured.

At least eight people sustained burn injuries including two critically wounded when a fire broke out in a sparkler birthday candle manufacturing factory on Saturday, police said.
According to police, the incident occurred on Saturday evening in the factory at Tarihal Industrial Area and in no time the entire facility was in flames. People rushed to rescue the workers there and reportedly dragged out few of them.
The fire brigade rushed to the spot with an ambulance and the injured were taken to the hospital. The residents said the factory was started only recently. The police were trying to find out the owner, manager and supervisor of the factory. (PTI)
Forty students of Government Higher Primary School in Gollarahatti, in Chitradurga district, fell sick and 26 of them had to be hospitalised after eating the midday meal served at the school on Thursday afternoon.
Doddappa MC, headmaster of the school, said, “On Thursday afternoon I received calls from villagers and teachers who complained that students are falling unconscious and are vomiting. By the time I reached the school, some students had been admitted to the hospital. However, all students are okay.”
He added that food samples have been sent to the laboratory to ascertain if it was a case of food poisoning. Read more
Karnataka reported 1,456 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, of which 1,154 cases were detected in Bengaluru alone. Currently, there are 8,848 active cases in the state (Bengaluru - 7,530).
The state, however, did not witness any virus-related fatalities in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate has reached 4.66 per cent.
As many as 1,096 patients recovered from the disease on Saturday.

Karnataka Congress leader B Ramanath Rai on Saturday asked the state government to hold a judicial enquiry into the role of BJP leader K S Eshwarappa in the suicide of contractor Santhosh Patil.
Addressing reporters here, Rai said the death note of the deceased contractor had implicated Eshwarappa and alleged that the BJP leader's actions had driven him to suicide.
The decision of the state police to give a clean chit to Eshwarappa has aggravated the miseries of the family of the deceased, Rai said, adding, they have lost all hopes of justice.
The clean chit given to Eshwarappa by the police in the contractor suicide case is not a victory for truth but a victory for falsehood made out with political influence, the former minister said. (PTI)
The High Court of Karnataka has issued notice to the state government in a petition challenging the anti-conversion ordinance brought in by the dispensation.
The petition was filed by Delhi-based Evangelical Fellowship of India and the All Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights and heard by a division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Alok Aradhe. The court issued a notice to the government on Friday.
The Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion law was passed through an ordinance. The law is an affront against Article 25 of the Constitution of India which guarantees religious freedom, the petition said. The petition pleaded that no coercive action under the law which was brought through an ordinance on May 17, 2022 be exercised. (PTI)
Former Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa on Saturday said his son and BJP state vice-president B Y Vijayendra has the strength and capacity to win an election from anywhere but the final call has to be taken by the party high command.
Yediyurappa, who is an eight-time MLA from Shikaripura assembly constituency in Shivamogga, said he will not contest the next assembly election but would 'suggest' the party high command to field his son.

The selection of candidates through the manipulation of the exam process as seen in the police sub-inspectors’ (PSI) recruitment in Karnataka is a crime than can lead to “anarchy in the society” and no proper services can be expected from candidates selected through such a system, the Karnataka High Court has stated while rejecting the bail petitions of seven accused in the PSI scam.
Justice H P Sandesh of the Karnataka High Court, who began monitoring investigations by the CID unit of the Karnataka police into the PSI recruitment exam scam, during the bail hearings over the past month has said that the scam will impact society at large and make people lose faith in the governance system.
The judge rejected the claims for bail made on the grounds of lack of evidence and the offences in the recruitment scam not being punishable with death or imprisonment for life. Read more
Squabbling in the Congress' Karnataka unit between leaders owing allegiance to state president D K Shivakumar and former chief minister Siddaramaiah over who should be the chief minister if the party comes to power in next year's Assembly elections continued with the former calling upon party members to "first work to bring the party to power".
Reacting to party MLA B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan's remark that people of the state wanted Siddaramaiah to be the next chief minister, Shivakumar asked everyone to "keep their mouths shut and work to bring the party to power".
"I will speak of only those who are of my level. Everyone should keep their mouth shut and work to bring the party to power," Shivakumar told reporters in response to Khan's statement expressing support for Siddaramaiah. (PTI)

The Aam Aadmi Party held a protest condemning the decision of the police to give a clean chit to former minister K S Eshwarappa in the suicide case of contractor Santhosh Patil.
Speaking in the protest held at freedom park in Bengaluru, A A P Bengaluru Political Activities President Channappa Gowda Nallooru said, "The state government is trying to reinstate the tainted minister Eshwarappa in the Cabinet, and for this reason, it pressured the police to give him a clean chit. The police have confirmed that Santosh Patil had sent a death note on WhatsApp against Eshwarappa before committing suicide. Hence it is condemnable that Eshwarappa was given a clean chit without even conducting an inquiry. By this, the state B J P government has sent a bad message that it is in favor of the criminals."

BMRCL has become the first Metro in India to test 5G network under a Pilot Project of TRAI.
The 5G network radiated in 200 m radius, deployed by Reliance Jio at M G Road station. The test has achieved 1.45 Gbps download and 65 Mbps upload speeds, making it 50 times faster than 4G.
