A family of four from Andhra Pradesh, residing in Bengaluru, are suspected to be among the 20 people reported dead in a fire that gutted a Hyderabad-Bengaluru bus near Kurnool in the early hours of Friday.
A man identified as Ramesh, his wife and two young children had reportedly travelled to their hometown of Hyderabad for Diwali, and were returning to Bengaluru when the incident occurred. A confirmation of their deaths is awaited, according to the Karnataka Police.
The fuel tank of the private bus on its way to Bengaluru caught fire following an accident involving a scooter. The bus with 41 passengers is reported to have caught fire instantaneously, charring several passengers to death.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other leaders have condoled the deaths in the incident.
“Disturbed and pained by the tragic bus fire accident on the Hyderabad–Bengaluru route near Chinnatekuru village in Kurnool district. Several precious lives were lost and many sustained injuries in this heartbreaking incident,” Siddaramaiah said.
Kharge also expressed his condolences. “The tragic incident of a bus catching fire on the Hyderabad–Bengaluru highway in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, resulting in the loss of many precious lives, is profoundly distressing. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of all the passengers who lost their lives in this tragedy and wish a swift recovery to those injured. It is imperative to ensure accountability for these unfortunate recurring incidents,” he said.
Former chief minister and BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai also termed the incident “heartbreaking”.
