Ahead of PM Modi’s visit, NSUI leaders put under ‘house arrest’ in Bengaluru

‘NSUI leaders wanted to hold a protest when PM Modi was about to come for the inauguration of the Yellow Line of Namma Metro,’ a Bengaluru police source said.

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bengaluru on Sunday, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the youth wing of the Congress, alleged that senior leaders of their organisation were put under ‘house arrest’ by the city police.

A police source said the cops detained NSUI leaders as they were planning to protest over the alleged electoral malpractices recently highlighted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. “They wanted to hold a protest when the prime minister was about to come for the inauguration of the Yellow Line of Namma Metro,” the source added.

The Bengaluru police reportedly put Lakshya Raj V, president, NSUI Bengaluru central district, Keethi Ganesh, state president, NSUI, and other leaders under ‘house arrest’.

Basavaraju A P, General Secretary, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, and, In-charge, Karnataka state NSUI unit, said on X, “Today, while the Prime Minister visits Bengaluru, our NSUI Karnataka office bearers have been unjustly detained and kept under house arrest simply on suspicion that we might protest against the misuse of the Election Commission.”

“This is unacceptable in a democracy. The right to peaceful protest is guaranteed by our Constitution, and no government or police force has the authority to pre-emptively silence voices of dissent. Karnataka State Police & BENGALURU CITY POLICE @CPBlr, I urge you to immediately release our NSUI leaders and ensure that our democratic rights are protected. Suppressing students and youth will not silence the truth. We will continue to stand up for justice and for our Constitution,” he added.
