Following Tuesday night’s attack on three Manipuri students by locals, the Bangalore city police has decided to hold neighborhood meetings around the city to help foster amicable relationships between locals and people from the northeastern states in India and from Africa.
The move follows an attack on three students from Manipur at a restaurant in east Bangalore by three drunk youths who were demanding that the Manipuri youths must converse in the local Kannada language. A large number of youths from the north east and students from Africa currently reside in Bangalore and are often the target of heckling and teasing by ignorant locals.
In an effort to prevent people from the north east from being troubled the Bangalore police on Thursday also decided to open rowdy sheets against the three accused of attacking the Manipuri students in a restaurant on Hennur Main Road near Kothanur.
The three Manipuri students – T Michael Lamjathang Haokip, 26 and his two friends were attacked on Tuesday night by locals identified as Arun Kumar, Karunakaran and James, all three of whom work as drivers.
Deputy Commissioners of Police for the East and North-East divisions in Bangalore have been asked to hold neighborhood meetings in their areas, the additional commissioner of police (law and order) Alok Kumar. The neighborhood meetings will be held around the city on Sundays.
The jurisdictional police station inspector will hold such meetings to develop ties between people living in these areas. The meetings will help win the confidence of people to continue to live in Bangalore.
“The neighborhood meetings will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They will be held whenever required,” the police official said.
