A woman constable attached to Gujarat CID (Crime) and a bootlegger from Kutch were arrested late Sunday for allegedly trying to run over six policemen by their car on National Highway 41 near Bhachau town in Kutch.
Acting on a tip-off, Chandrashekhar Dave and Vinod Prajapati, constables of the Local Crime Branch (LCB) of Kutch East police, started tailing a Thar SUV in which the accused — bootlegger Yuvrajsinh Jadeja and constable Nita Chaudhary — were driving towards Gandhidham town.
As the Thar kept heading towards Bhachau, Dave called up Sub-Inspector Dineshkumar Zala of Bhachau police station and sought help.
Zala set out in his car with constable Mohan Sonara and alerted head constable Bindubha Jadeja and constable Vishnudan Gadhvi of Bhachau police station, who were patrolling on the highway. They also joined the chase.
As per the FIR lodged by the Bhachau police, as Dave blocked the way of the Thar, Jadeja rammed his car into Dave’s. Jadeja then tried to escape but hit Bindhubha’s car. As Jadeja again tried to speed away, Zala and Sonara signalled him to stop. But when Jadeja sped his car towards them, Zala fired on the Thar and forced Jadeja to stop.
Kutch East LCB Inspector Naran Chudasama said: “The bootlegger still didn’t come out from the car. The police had to break open the window of the car and detain him. Chaudhary, who was in the passenger seat, was also detained.”
Police have found 16 bottles of liquor and two tins of beer in Jadeja’s car. Jadeja and Chaudhary were formally arrested after a case was registered against them under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC, among others.
